PAS90 Picture (PAS90)PAS 90:2006

Site safety is not only the responsibility of permanent employees. Site visitors, such as mobile engineers, must play their own role in the maintenance of health and safety.

Until quite recently, however, there was no unified agreed standard to govern the performance of engineers on site – only a proliferation of ‘passport’ schemes.

A potentially confusing situation has now been clarified, however, with the arrival of PAS 90:2006, a ‘Publicly Available Specification’ of safe working practice for on-site maintenance and repair of industrial trucks.

Mitsubishi Picture (PAS90)This 13-page document was the result of two-and-a-half years’ hard work by BITA, in conjunction with its own members as well as the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA), plus BITA partner organisations the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and, especially, BSI British Standards.

PAS 90:2006 provides a definitive but concise guide to the basic requirements of safe working practice, including the minimum safety requirements for onsite maintenance applicable to service engineers and employers, ensuring they comply with the law and follow best practice. Its highly comprehensive contents include:

  • public and employers’ liability insurance
  • driver licensing
  • health and safety and training
  • environmental awareness
  • handling lubrication, fuel, and battery fluids.
  • waste disposal and incident reporting.
  • vehicle and equipment maintenance and calibration.
  • Safe manual handling
  • Record keeping
